Hi, my name is Ben Pryse, and I am currently a Senior Music Education student at James Madison University. I am a future musician in the Army Regional Bands (42R) on the trumpet and also as a vocalist. My love of both performing and educating has helped balance my music career in a way that prevents me from becoming too selfish or too selfless.
VISION STATEMENT
The most ideal learning environment is one not cultured in fear, but instead in inspiration. This is my vision for a future classroom. I would not want my students to fear me, and I certainly would not want them to be afraid to make mistakes, as music is brutally unforgiving which makes its study that much more of a discipline. I want to create an environment in which everyone takes seriously the knowledge I’ve accrued over the years, but also create a light, joking environment where there isn’t overwhelming pressure to succeed. This would be a difficult task to achieve, but creating a culture of inspiration would encourage students to want to be at their best at all times while also encouraging balance with all aspects of their life. I want to encourage my students to get organized, and even help them schedule themselves more efficiently so they can all become the best people they can.
I am always inspired by my current and former teachers, especially Dr. Ross Ahlhorn, who taught me, through example, the benefits and necessity of efficiency in practice and in life (without sacrificing the need to fail and take risks). Gigging with Gryzzle was an amazing bridge for me to interact with the music scene and make friends with people who love music as much as I do. Through my love for music, my drive to get better, my organized, regimented schedule and great teachers I've had in the past, I hope to create a positive and organized classroom that does the same for its students as I had growing up.
